SARANDA, May 9th 2019 – The European Integration and Foreign Assistance Coordination Unit in the Municipality of Saranda, in cooperation with the city’s high schools, organized an activity on “Getting to know Europe”.

Representatives from high schools of the Municipality of Saranda were participants. The activity aimed to raise awareness of the youth of the city on some of the most important values that distinguish and make EU unique.

The coordinator of the European Integration Unit gave an overview of what European Union is and what it represents. Through this activity, principles on which the EU is built and functions, like solidarity, respect, unity in diversity, civic engagement, volunteering etc. were introduced to the youth present.

Albania is not yet a member of the EU, but this 9th of May is special for Albanians as expectations are for an opening of negotiations with the big European family.

In this spirit, the Municipality of Saranda is part of the activities organized in the framework of Europe Week.

The activities organized during this week, will focus on youth, as the most active and profitable social category by Albania’s European integration.

Following, the youth present discussed the history, geography and cultural heritage of Europe and Albania.

Closing the activity, the youth presented some drawings illustrating, through tools and the language of visual art, the story of how May 9th became Europe Day, which is linked to the Milan Summit in 1985.

It’s noteworthy that all the materials used by the young students were recyclable.
