The project "Municipalities for Europe" has resumed the tour of large meetings in all 61 Municipalities of Albania, now held virtually, due to restrictions from the Covid 19 pandemic and the need for compliance with health protection measures that require the avoidance of large group gatherings.

The next meeting of the "Municipalities for Europe" team was held with the Municipality of Klos, in the presence of the Mayor, Mr. Ilmi Hoxha and staff members of this institution, coordinated by the European Integration Unit of Klos Municipality.

The meeting which was moderated by Mrs. Jolanda Trebicka the Project Manager of "Municipalities for Europe", was also greeted by Mrs. Lieze Vanëymelbeke, Program Manager for Justice and Home Affairs at the EU Delegation to Albania, as well as Mr. Bekim Murati, Director of the Agency for the Support of Local Self-Government.

In his speech, the Mayor of Klos, Mr. Ilmi Hoxha expressed that “we, as a municipality, will attend to all our responsibilities and obligations linked to the very important mission of obtaining the membership onto the great European family. "We must be responsible in every step we take, in view of the role that we as a local government must fulfill within the integration process."

Further, while presenting the Report "Municipalities in the Process of Albania's EU Integration", Mrs. Trebicka stressed on the importance of the participation of municipalities in the process of evaluating their own performance, while thanking Mrs. Vanëymelbeke and the EU delegation for their profound support in this process.

The representative of the EU delegation thanked the mayor of Klos, for the virtual invitation to the Municipality of Klos, thanking also Mr. Murati, for the support and Mrs. Trebicka and the entire project team of "Municipalities for Europe", for organizing these activities at such a challenging times.

She added that “EU units are making it possible for municipalities to be there for the funding opportunities that have emerged and will emerge in the future, and they are playing a very important role in the integration process. As the EU Ambassador, Mr. Luigi Soreca, called them, ‘EU Integration Units are not only the EU ambassadors to local communities, but they are also community ambassadors to the EU’. We would like all the mayors in all 61 municipalities to give due importance and support to these structures. Better and happier municipalities mean better and happier citizens. "We cannot talk about European integration without talking about good governance and the rule of law."

The representative of the delegation called on the leaders of local government institutions to “learn from this report, to think and implement the recommendations that would improve the lives of citizens. "All municipalities are in the same boat and everyone can learn from each other", she added.

Mr. Murati addressed the participants by saying that “The Agency is working closely with MfE to support all the work and commitments of municipalities in this important process. This is the third Report and of course the conclusions are improving as progress is seen on the local level performance regarding the integration process. We are all aware that this is the only way to fulfil the aspiration of Albanians. Every effort and every commitment of AMVV and the ministry is necessary. Today we are talking about results because what we started in 2017 we now see becoming concrete with direct EU projects at the local level ".

Further on, the experts Mirsa Titka and Iva Çoku presented the recommendations of the Performance Evaluation Report, as well as the opportunities offered by the European Union funding in Albania. The tour of the virtual meetings of the Municipalities to Europe will continue throughout the months of September and October.
